Bancroft’s garden is an outdoor classroom where students learn through hands-on exploration, connecting science, nutrition, and environmental stewardship. Throughout the school year, classes visit the garden to plant, care for, and harvest a variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs while discovering the life cycles of plants and the importance of caring for the natural world.

One of the highlights of each garden lesson is tasting what they’ve grown. After harvesting, students often prepare a simple recipe using fresh ingredients from the garden—don’t be surprised if your child comes home asking for a new vegetable they discovered at school!

Garden classes at Bancroft are made possible by Growing Healthy Kids, a local nonprofit that brings farm-to-school education to 22 Mt. Diablo Unified elementary schools. Through hands-on garden lessons, students develop an appreciation for nature, healthy eating, and environmental stewardship while building curiosity, confidence, and lifelong learning skills.
